Death announces himself as the novel’s narrator. He claims that the first time he saw the book thief was on a train. When he returned for a pilot who had crashed his plane, he saw her again. The third time was following a bombing. He assigns a color to each sighting: the Nazi flag’s hues of white, red, and black. The story then begins with death. Liesel, her mother, and her brother Werner are on their way to Munich by train when Werner passes away unexpectedly. Liesel and her mother disembark from the train to bury the dead, and Liesel takes a book from a gravedigger. Liesel will be raised by foster parents in the town of Molching, where she and her mother will continue their trip. Rosa and Hans Hubermann. Liesel dislikes her foster parents at first, but Hans wins her over by teaching her how to roll cigarettes.
Liesel gradually adjusts to her new existence, despite nightmares about her deceased brother. She meets and befriends Rudy, a neighbourhood kid who idolises American athlete Jesse Owens and begs Liesel to kiss him all the time. When Hans realises Liesel can’t read, he begins teaching her the alphabet, and the two work together to finish the book Liesel took from the gravedigger. Meanwhile, the political situation in Molching and throughout Germany is deteriorating, with the war intensifying and domestic food and labour shortages. Liesel takes another book from the flames when the community organises a book-burning to commemorate Hitler’s birthday.
Liesel begins delivering Rosa’s laundry. Ilsa Hermann, the mayor’s wife, is one of Rosa’s customers. Liesel is welcomed into Ilsa Hermann’s study one day when she marvels at the book-lined walls. Frau Hermann gives her permission to read in the office. Meanwhile, a German Jew named Max is hiding in a cupboard near Stuttgart, with no food, light, or water. A friend delivers him a map disguised in MKPF, Hitler’s memoirs, and bogus identification papers. Max exits the closet and boards the train to visit the Hubermanns. We learn that Hans fought alongside Max’s father during World War I. Hans promised Max’s mother that he would always be there for her after Max’s father died. Hans and Rosa hide Max in the basement when he arrives in Molching.
Frau Hermann informs Liesel that she can no longer afford to send the clothes out. Liesel is enraged because her family is already struggling to make ends meet, while the Hermanns has everything. Liesel begins taking books from the Hermanns’ library with the help of Rudy. Liesel makes a snowman for Max in the basement for Christmas. Hans and Rosa are concerned about how they would dispose of Max’s body if he becomes ill and falls into a coma. Max is able to recuperate after several months. When Nazi soldiers come, they assess the basement to determine whether it is deep enough to serve as a bomb shelter. They don’t see Max, which is fortunate. Liesel keeps robbing the Hermanns’ library of books.
As the Allies commence bombing near Molching, residents on Liesel’s block are forced to seek refuge in a neighbor’s basement. Liesel reads to them until it’s safe to leave after each raid. Meanwhile, Max is left alone in the Hubermanns’ cellar. As the war progresses, Nazi forces begin to parade Jewish detainees through town on their way to the Dachau detention camp. Hans gives an old guy a piece of bread as he notices him straining to keep up with the gang. Both the father and Hans are whipped by Nazi soldiers. Max is no longer safe in the basement, as Hans recognizes he has sparked suspicion and brought attention to himself.
Max leaves Hans and Rosa’s residence that night. Hans waits for soldiers to arrive and take him away, but none appear. Instead, they come to Rudy’s house to recruit him for a Nazi leadership school. Rudy’s father, Alex, is adamant about not letting his son go. The soldiers leave, but Alex and Hans are inducted into the German army a few days later. Rudy and Liesel go to the next Jewish march and sprinkle bread in the streets after Alex and Hans leave for duty. Rosa presents Liesel with “The Word Shaker,” a book that Max created for her. It’s the narrative of Max and Liesel’s friendship, with the hope that they’ll meet again someday.
Liesel is given a blank notebook by the mayor’s wife so she can start writing her own story. Liesel’s neighborhood gets blasted one night while she is in the basement revising her manuscript. Hans, Rosa, Rudy, and the other residents of the neighborhood are all murdered. When Liesel is rescued from the rubble, she discovers Rudy’s body and gives him the kiss he has always desired. When the workers carry her away, she leaves her completed book, “The Book Thief,” behind. Death, who has been keeping an eye on things, comes to the book’s rescue. Liesel relocates to the mayor’s home with his wife. Max comes to Molching after the concentration camps are liberated and discover Liesel. They cry and hug one other. Liesel matures over time. She relocates to Australia, where she raises a family and lives to be a great-grandmother. When Death comes to claim her soul, he shows her the book she penned all those years ago.
