Lord Voldemort has reclaimed his throne, and his wrath has been felt by Muggles and Wizards alike. Snape promises Narcissa that he would safeguard her son, Draco, in an Unbreakable Vow. Dumbledore visits Harry’s aunt and uncle at 4 Privet Drive to get him. Harry and Dumbledore stop on their way to the Burrow to recruit Horace Slughorn to return to Hogwarts as a teacher. Harry is reunited with Ron and Hermione, two of his closest pals
Harry is given a used Potions textbook that previously belonged to “The Half-Blood Prince.” In the margins of the book, Harry writes spells and revisions, and he uses the Prince’s notes to excel in Potions. Dumbledore meets with Harry on a regular basis, and they utilize Dumbledore’s Pensieve to examine the memories of those who have had direct touch with Voldemort. Dumbledore believes that if Harry can learn enough about Voldemort’s past, he will be able to defeat him when they ultimately face-off, as the prophecy foretells. Hermione is ecstatic when Harry falls in love with Ginny, Ron’s sister, and Ron and Lavender break up. Harry spends a lot of his time on his job as Quidditch captain and keeping track of Draco Malfoy. Harry uses his Marauder’s Map to track down Draco, although he is frequently unable to locate him on the map. When Harry finds Draco isn’t on the map, he’s utilizing the Room of Requirement on Hogwarts’ seventh floor, which turns into whatever its user needs. Harry makes every effort to obtain entry to see what Draco is up to, but he is unable to do so until he understands exactly what Draco is doing in the chamber.

Snape pushes into the tower as Draco lowers his wand. Harry is unable to move or talk, but he can hear Order members fighting Death Eaters below. Snape wields his wand and sends Dumbledore flying over the edge of the tower, killing him. Dumbledore’s influence on Harry is broken when he dies, and Harry runs after Snape, determined to avenge his friend and headmaster’s murder. Harry is crushed when Snape escapes. He understands that the locket he and Dumbledore acquired is not a Horcrux when he examines it. A note from someone identified as “R. A. B.” is found within the locket. Harry informs his companions that he will not be returning to Hogwarts next year, but will instead seek down and defeat Voldemort.
