Princess Darya “Dolly,” the wife of Prince Stephan “Stiva” Oblonsky, banishes her husband from their home owing to his infidelity in the Russian Empire in 1874. Anna Karenina, Stiva’s sister and a well-known socialite who lives in St. Petersburg with her older husband, Count Alexei Karenin, and their son, Sergei “Seryozha” Alexeyich Karenin, travels to Moscow to urge Dolly to forgive Stiva. Stiva runs into an old friend, Konstantin Levin, a wealthy landowner and nobleman who is despised by Moscow’s elite because he prefers the country to the city.
Levin declares his love for Princess Ekaterina “Kitty” Alexandrovna, Stiva’s sister-in-law, and Stiva urges him to propose. Kitty, on the other hand, declines since she is planning to marry Count Alexei Vronsky, a wealthy cavalry officer. Levin meets with his older brother, Nikolai, who has renounced his inheritance in favor of marrying a prostitute named Masha. Levin should marry one of Nikolai’s peasants, Nikolai advises. Anna meets Vronsky’s mother, Countess.
Vronskaya, on the train to Moscow, is embroiled in a controversy over her own infidelity. Anna encounters Vronsky himself there, and the two are attracted to each other. Anna wants to know if anything can be done after a railway worker is killed in an accident at the station.
Vronsky is seen handing over a big sum of money to other train workers for the benefit of the deceased’s relatives. Anna persuades Dolly to return Stiva. Kitty tries to dance with Vronsky at a ball that night, but he dances with Anna instead, leaving Kitty devastated. Later, Vronsky informs Anna that he must be with her wherever she goes.
