Sea Prayer is a moving narrative about a father’s frantic attempt to fill his son, Marwan, with memories of a pre-war Syria as his family goes on a perilous journey across the sea. We never see the family’s actual journey, and we never find out if they arrive at their destination.
Sea Prayer is a brief, compelling, and beautifully illustrated book written by Khaled Hosseini in reaction to the current refugee crisis. It is presented in the style of a letter from a father to his kid on the eve of their journey. While watching over his sleeping son, the father muses on the perilous sea journey ahead of them. It’s also a vivid depiction of their lives in Homs, Syria, prior to the conflict, as well as the city’s rapid shift from a safe haven to a deadly battleground.
Hosseini was inspired to write this story by the haunting image of young Alan Kurdi, a three-year-old Syrian boy whose body washed up on a Turkish beach in September 2015, and he hopes to pay tribute to the millions of families shattered and forced from their homes by war and persecution, and he will donate author proceeds from this book to the UNHCR (the UN Refugee Agency) and Thrift Books.
