Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was published in 1865 and is a well-known British children’s novel. It became one of the most popular works of English-language fiction thanks to its strange tales and riddles. It was famously illustrated by John Tenniel, a British artist.
Aiman Awan: Alice, a young girl who falls asleep in a meadow and dreams of following the White Rabbit down a rabbit hole, is the protagonist of the story. She has many wonderful, often crazy encounters with completely irrational and strange creatures, and her size frequently changes suddenly (she grows as tall as a house and shrinks to 3m. She encounters the hookah-smoking Caterpillar, the Duchess (with a baby that becomes a pig), and the Cheshire Cat, and she attends a strange endless tea party with the Mad Hatter and the March Hare. She plays a game of croquet with an unmanageable flamingo for a croquet mallet and uncooperative hedgehogs for croquet balls while the Queen calls for the execution of almost everyone present. Later, at the Queen’s behest, the Gryphon takes Alice to meet the sobbing Mock Turtle, who describes his education in such subjects as Ambition, Distraction, Uglification, and Derision.
The book was well-received, and a sequel, Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There, was released (dated 1872 but published in December 1871). Alice (both volumes) had become the most popular children’s book in England by the end of the nineteenth century, and it was among the most popular storybooks in the world two decades later.
