Healing is a major concept in The Secret Garden. All three characters must recover from their deaths. Mary’s parents die, Colin’s mother dies, and Archibald loses his beloved wife. In a freak accident in the secret garden, she dies, and Archibald locks it up and neglects it.
Mary Lennox is the protagonist of the tale, and she lives in India with her wealthy British family. She is a pampered and obnoxious 10-year-old girl who has been ignored by her unloving parents and spoiled by her staff. Mary is orphaned when her parents and servants are killed in a cholera pandemic. She is brought to England to live with a widowed uncle, Archibald. Her uncle, on the other hand, is rarely seen at Misselthwaite. The fastidious Mrs. Medlock, the estate’s chief housekeeper, takes Mary to the estate and locks her in a chamber, telling her not to explore the property. When Mary discovers that the chambermaid, Martha, is not as subservient as the maids in India, she becomes irritated. Martha’s anecdotes about her own family, particularly those about her 12-year-old brother, Dickon, who has a near-magical ability with animals, pique her interest. Mary is desperate to find the late Mrs. Craven’s walled garden, which was shut ten years previously by the uncle after his wife’s death. She spends the following few weeks exploring the grounds and conversing with Ben Weatherstaff, the elderly gardener.
Mary discovers an old key while following a friendly bird one day and believes it will open the locked garden. Soon after, she notices a door in the garden wall and enters the secret garden. It’s overgrown with dormant rose bushes and vines (it’s winter), but she notices some green shoots and starts removing and weeding that area.
Mary keeps working in the garden. Her encounter with nature causes her to change: she becomes nicer, more compassionate, and more outgoing. Dickon appears one day and begins assisting her in the secret garden. The weird sounds Mary has been hearing in the mansion are the cries of Mary’s purportedly sick and crippled 10-year-old cousin, her uncle’s son Colin, who has been confined to the house and cared for by staff. He and Mary become friends, and Mary learns that Colin does not have the spinal deformity that he had assumed.
Colin realizes that he can stand after Dickon and Mary take him to visit the garden. The three children explore the garden together and plant seeds to revive it, and they become healthier and happier as a result of their friendship and contact with nature. When her uncle returns and sees his son’s incredible transformation, as well as his once-abandoned garden now in blossom, he embraces his family and their renewed attitude on life.
